AW. Here is an image of a photo by Arlington J. Wolfe that was taken from SLOPE Tower near the 24th Street Turntable in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1946. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6840, an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during September of 1926 and retired in June of 1959 after 23 years of faithful service. It's just returned from a helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where it was uncoupled and returned to Altoona for further assignment. The moisture on the tender's sides shows how much water remains in the tank. The water tank up on the embankment supplies the water plug down by the Turntable. Brush Mountain dominates the hazy distance. William E. Burket Collection. |
